Ilario (Larry Baione) Zannino

DOB 6-15-20, Boston MA. 1964 photo.
From Shawmut Avenue in the South End, where he once allegedly stabbed a waiter to death for slow service, and patrolled the streets hanging off an automobile running board, revolver in hand. Boston Mafia underboss Gennaro Angiulo's top enforcer. He had his own "clubhouse" on North Margin Street in the North End of Boston. Was shaking down Gerry Angiulo in the 1950’s after Angiulo took over the numbers racket. So Angiulo went down to Federal Hill and supposedly dumped a bag with $100,000 (or $10,000 – the stories vary) in cash and told Raymond L.S. Patriarca there was plenty more where that came from. From that instant forward, Zannino was Angiulo’s muscle.

He was better known as “Larry Baione.” After the conviction or flight of everyone else in the Winter Hill Gang in the race-fixing scandal, he plotted to kill Whitey and Stevie Flemmi and take over their rackets. But still he insisted that any Mafia associates repay their debts to “the Hill.” As he told one: “We’re the Hill and the Hill is us. Maybe you didn’t know that.”  Speaking of Whitey Bulger and Stevie Flemmi, he said, “These are guys who straighten a thing out. And we cannot tolerate them getting fucked.” Confirmed for the feds on the hidden bug who had murdered Mafia turncoat Joe Barboza. The killer was J. R. Russo – “a genius with a carbine,” as Baione described him.

In 1981, Baione discussed on an FBI bug with Angiulo all the illegal businesses they were in together: “Pimps! Prostitutes! Marijuana!” Larry was often knee-walking drunk, which he tried to explain to Judge David Nelson after his conviction. He also claimed he was dying, but when the jury came back with its guilty verdict, he somehow rose from his cot to tell them to go fuck themselves. Asking for a reduction in sentence later, his son wrote to the judge, “My father is no angel but he’ll soon be with them if he isn’t released.” He wasn’t, and indeed he was soon dead, although it seems doubtful that Larry Baione is now spending much time with the angels.
